After leaving Falcon College John trained as a safari guide under the guidance of Lionel Reynolds at Sikumi Tree Lodge on the border of Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe. After sitting the Learner Guides exam and passing John turned to camp management and spent a number of years looking after five star camps including, Samanyanga, Sondelani & Masau Camp. To complete his training John then worked for Swainsons Safaris, which, is a hunting outfit but from here he was able to gain invaluable experience of the larger game such as Elephant, Lion, Leopard & Buffalo.

Due to the collapse of the wildlife and tourism industry in Zimbabwe John relocated to London for nine years where he was the Anti Money Laundering Compliance Manager for a leading money transfer company. Not content with the hustle and bustle of city life, John has now relocated to South Africa where he has turned once again to his passion for wildlife and the outdoors. John set up Chimhavira Overland Safaris cc in 2009 based on his own travel itineraries and ensures all guests leave as friends.

Etienne left Falcon Collage in 2000 a few years after John. Etienne wanted to get the Zimbabwean Guiding License, this was at the height of the Zimbabwean political problems. So headed over to Australia for a few years of university. On his return to Africa he entered the Lodge industry in South Africa and after 7 years met Leana (now his wife) and headed over to Zambia to manage a small bush camp on the banks of the Zambezi.

During Etienne’s time as a guide he learned a lot about photography, and created www.photographicafrica.com through this website Etienne would like to show case his images and photographs taken across Southern Africa. This site also offers a platform on which Etienne markets and sells his images as Fine Art Prints. Photographic Africa also offers images to selected conservation and research projects that require images for their research and conservation effort at no charge at all.

John and Etienne are like-minded in terms of where they want to take Chimhavira Over land Safaris. Etienne joined Chimhavira in December 2010 and will be leading some special trips designed for photographers for all skill levels.

Neil was brought up on a farm in Zimbabwe. He used to train hawks while at school and originally wanted to be a game ranger, so obtained a degree in Zoology and Botany. However, he has spent his life in teaching and the IT industry. But he still loves all things wild, though he now lives in the UK.

Having a contact in the UK aids in Chimhavira’s growing success, Neil is both knowledgeable and easily contactable and will be more than happy to discuss your Overland Safari options with you. Neil will also discuss your Chimhavira memories with you
